ACCESSIBLE HOUSING

Building an effective Calgary

Alex Williams is committed to creating housing opportunities for all Calgarians, regardless of their stage of life and the unique needs that may come with it. Alex will work with both private and public housing providers to deliver what Calgarians need.

When people have access to secure housing they’re able to rise to their potential and contribute to their community. Taking a housing first approach means supporting affordable housing projects, particularly around transit. It means safer transit, more opportunities for small business, and a Calgary that’s supportive of everyone who calls this place home.

Depending on our lifestyle, phase, or age our housing needs may change. Some may enjoy living in an apartment above a grocery store, while others prefer a single detached home near a school. Others still may be looking to downsize as their housing needs change. With people of all needs coming to Calgary, we should foster the existing housing diversity in Ward 11, especially in areas around our Primary Transit Network.

Macleod Trail, from Anderson Road all the way to Downtown, is infamous for being horrible to drive, walk, bike, or simply to be there. Many Ward 11ers frequent it for work, shopping, and other needs. We should, and we can, do better. Along the Red Line and surrounded by shops, Macleod Trail presents a unique opportunity for us to build transit oriented communities, while simultaneously uplifting the area with parks, more small businesses, and infrastructure upgrades that benefit us all.

EFFECTIVE TRANSPORTATION

Servicing a growing community

Recognizing Calgary's expanding population, the party emphasizes strategic growth and community development. Policies aim to ensure inclusivity, accessibility, and affordability for all residents.

After a shocking number of traffic related deaths on our streets in 2024, Calgarians are looking for a real change, demanding safe routes to school for their kids and accessible community amenities for us all. By designing our streets to reduce speeding and collisions, while increasing mobility options, we can transform our communities to be safer and supportive of human connection.

A city works best when everyone has access to transportation options that work for them. This means being able to walk to the grocery store, bike to a friend’s home, drive to hockey practice, and take transit to a football game. Whether you choose a mode based on your personal comfort, needs for the day, or for the exercise, what matters is the freedom to choose a mode that works for you.

As Calgary grows, the geometric need for public transit becomes increasingly apparent. We need transit that’s safe, securely invested in, and takes Calgarians where they need to go, when they need to go there. More buses, convenient routes, safe stations, continuous improvements. These are all things we need to do to make transit a real transportation option for Calgarians.

TRANSPARENT COMMUNICATION

Communication leads to trust

Strong communities are built on trust, and trust is built through transparency. Calgarians deserve a City that clearly communicates how public funds are spent, how transit disruptions affect daily life, and how to engage with their elected representatives. When decisions are made behind closed doors or without clear explanations, frustration grows. Alex is committed to making information easier to access, ensuring that Ward 11 residents always know where to turn for answers.

The City of Calgary’s budget impacts which services get funded, which projects move forward, and what priorities shape Calgary’s future. Budget decisions should be easy to understand, not buried in complex reports or vague justifications. Alex will advocate for a clearer, more accessible budgeting process, ensuring that every resident can see how their tax dollars are being used and why.

Throughout the year, Calgarians face delays, closures, and detours. These may be due to construction, weather, or emergencies. Having clear lines of communication through apps, posters, and announcements can help ensure Calgarians get where they want to go. Beyond day-to-day operations, continued communications of the RouteAhead and its progress is critical.

City Councillors should be visible, available, and engaged with their communities – and not just during election season. Residents should never have to wonder who to contact or how to raise concerns about their neighborhoods. As Ward 11’s Councillor, Alex is committed to maintaining open office hours, attending community meetings, and ensuring every resident has a direct line to him as their representative.
